How Generators Can Thrive in Business

I’m convinced that having a business is one of the most natural expressions of Generator energy. After all, we are builders who thrive on putting our energy toward our passions, free from outside constraints and control. So many of us want to do something that doesn’t yet exist in the world, so we have to create it for ourselves.

Yet, the process of translating ideas into tangible creations and taking action can sometimes feel challenging since we are designed to wait for a response before moving forward—at first glance, waiting for a response can feel antithetical to being successful in the world and getting things done. After all, aren’t we supposed to push through, hustle, and make our own luck? After over four years as Generator who created the successful business of my dreams, I am here to tell you that living through response can be efficient, lucrative, and logical.

So, let’s explore how Generators can navigate the early stages of starting a business and avoid burnout and frustration while embracing our unique energy dynamics.

Embracing the Creative and Ideation Stage:

For Generators, particularly those building personal brands or online businesses, there is an essential creative and ideation stage that cannot be rushed. This phase involves a conversation with the universe, the people around you, and your own soul, allowing you to find your unique path and connect with the right people who want to buy what you’re selling.

What are you energized by? What feels like it is appearing in your life and pulling at you over and over? What feels the most natural for you to do? What ignites your passion? What do you want to share with the world? It is crucial to recognize that this mystical process takes time and should not be forced. If you want to do something you’ve never done before, you often have to approach the beginning of a business as if it isn’t a business at all, but an experiment trying out anything and everything that ignites a spark of energy within, and then go from there. You can always figure out how to monetize something you love, but it’s harder to shift into doing something you love if you monetize tasks or creations that don’t energize you.

Supporting Yourself during the Initial Response Phase:

Putting excessive pressure on your business to generate revenue right from the start can stifle your creativity and hinder the organic growth process. While it is possible to start making money early on, it’s helpful to take the pressure off and focus on responding to the needs and desires of your audience/client base/community. By allowing yourself time and space to respond authentically, you can build a strong foundation for long-term success.

During the initial response phase, it is essential to have a means of supporting yourself financially. As Generators, investments are natural for us, be they time, energy, or money. To get a business off the ground, most of us have to make an investment that we may not see immediate returns on (but once we get momentum, will return to us 100x). Your supportive income could be through a job, a project, or savings that allow you to be fully open, creative, and experimental without pressure. By giving yourself this space, you can allow your responses to guide you and discover the direction in which your business wants to go.

Redirecting Attention during Plateaus and Pauses:

While waiting for responses and experiencing plateaus or pauses, it is beneficial to have alternative outlets toward which you can redirect your attention and energy. When you’re working on making something happen, it’s easy to start obsessing over outcomes or trying to push your energy to complete things when it may not be the right time. When you have somewhere else to redirect your energy in those moments when you’re not sure what step to take next, you can prevent frustration from creeping in, while still allowing yourself to remain engaged and productive.

You might have another joyful job, hobby, project, or commitment that you can focus on during those moments when you’re waiting for your next response to help you maintain a sense of purpose and satisfaction.

Trusting the Journey and Giving It Time:

The journey of starting a business as a Generator may take months or even years to fully unfold. The length of time it takes is ultimately unimportant because we are designed to focus on the journey! If we are doing something we love that energizes us, everything else can be figured out. Avoid fixating on strict timelines or financial goals that will stifle your creativity and connection to your inner Authority. Instead, focus on how you feel in the present, channel your life force towards activities that are energizing, and trust that everything will unfold in its own time, moment-by-moment, response-by-response.
