The Generator Plateau

If you’re a Generator, do you ever feel like you just get stuck? You’re chugging along, making progress on your journey to mastery when suddenly you feel like you just can’t move forward. You get frustrated—why is this happening? What are you doing wrong? You might be experiencing what we call the Generator plateau.

Although Generators hold the planet's life force energy in our Sacral centers, Pure Generators (i.e. not Manifesting Generators) have a non-linear way in which our energy expresses itself. We have no motor connected to our Throat Center, which means that our energy for doing things (Sacral) is not directly connected to expressing, doing, and creating (which happens in the Throat center).

So much of manifestation on Earth occurs through speech - through our Throat Center, we communicate our thoughts, feelings, and creative ideas. Getting these ideas out in the world has a big impact on influencing others, and influencing concrete action. However, just because we don't have a motor powering our Throat Center does not mean we lack creative power; we just have to understand how we engage with our creative power.

If you’re still wondering if you’re in the Generator Plateau, I have another post with some advice on how to figure out it out!

The Generator Process

As a Generator, when our Sacral comes into contact with something that provokes a response within us, we get energized—out Sacral is letting us know that it has the energy to commit to carrying out the activity/project/creation. This also refers to you if you have Emotional Authority —the difference is that you will allow your Emotional Authority to go through a cycle of your Emotional wave to make sure you are still energized at the end of the cycle (or not).

What our Sacral doesn't know is exactly what is coming up ahead, how it will handle it, or when it will finish. The Sacral does not provide us with awareness or additional info - it's a motor that is either on or off. It knows that it has the energy it needs to complete something, but it does not know the step-by-step blueprint for exactly how to do what it wants.

So, we begin an epic, mysterious journey of creation. We are very thorough and methodical; we don't skip steps or rush ahead, and instead go deeply into each challenge in front of us, guided by our Sacral response. As we move forward, we complete each step thoroughly. We go deep. It’s more natural for us to pause, reflect, and wait for the right thing to come along as opposed to forcing something to work and then re-doing it later. We operate in increments, steadily building and climbing.

However, what we will find is that as we move forward on a project, we will hit plateaus in our energy. These can last anywhere from a few minutes to hours, to days, to months, to years...depending on what the project is and how it is supposed to play out in our lives. As Generators, we are already surrendering in radical trust to our life force energy, so we don't need to worry about timelines. However, when we hit these plateaus, they can be destabilizing. How is it that we just worked for days, weeks, or months tirelessly with seemingly boundless energy on something we are deeply passionate about, only to wake up one day tired, uninterested, and completely lost as to where to go next?

This is called the Generator Plateau, and it is completely normal. The key here is not to quit. Generators have a reputation for being some of the best quitters in the world because when we reach this plateau, we get frustrated and give up. I don't blame us; it can be confusing and disorienting to wait for what to do next.

How to best weather the Generator plateau?

1. The first step is normalizing the plateau as a natural part of your process. The Generator plateau does not mean that you lack energy, are lazy, lack direction, or are incapable of finishing anything. These are all thoughts I've had about myself at one point. In fact, my biggest fear (before I found Human Design and understood what was happening to me) was that I couldn't leave my 9-5 job because if I did something for myself, I wouldn't have the energy to carry it out. Looking back, it feels wild that I had this fear because Generators are industrious, capable, and indomitable! In reality, I was scared of the Generator Plateau because I didn’t understand it.

2. When the Generator Plateau hits, celebrate! This means that you've completed another chapter of your creation. What you need to do now is rest or temporarily move on to another activity that feels good for your Sacral right now (this could be a different project, resting, spending time with people, journaling, getting out in nature, etc.)

3. Be open and patient as you wait for your next Sacral guidance from the world around you. When you hit a plateau, act as if you have all the patience and time in the world. What would you do if you knew that you would have clarity on the next step at the perfect moment? You don't need to press yourself to try to figure out the next step. This will send you into your head, which is exactly where we don't want our decisions to originate. The Generator plateau requires a lot of trust, but it's an important part to master in order to make sure that we aren't rushing things or getting frustrated and quitting when really we are just experiencing a lull.

Generators truly are extraordinary beings. We become masters of trust and universal flow, and the rewards are endless. The next inspiration WILL come, and usually, the quicker and more fully you surrender to not knowing what will come next, the faster that inspiration will come. It’s ok to rest, it’s ok to take a break, and it’s ok to do something different for a while.
