What Is a Human Design Relationship Chart?

A Human Design relationship chart compares two individual charts to show how your energies interact. When two charts are combined, they create a shared energetic field that reveals patterns of attraction, communication, support, and potential challenges.

Unlike traditional compatibility systems, Human Design does not label relationships as “good” or “bad.” Instead, it helps you understand how two people’s designs influence one another so you can navigate the relationship with greater awareness.

Human Design is built on accepting and understanding each other's differences and unique qualities. If two people feel drawn together as friends, lovers, family members, or business partners, there is always a reason for that connection.

Understanding Your Relationship Chart

Your Human Design relationship chart helps you explore:

• how your energies interact
• areas where you naturally support each other
• places where your designs may challenge each other
• the unique dynamic created when your auras combine

By understanding these patterns, you can approach your relationship with more compassion, awareness, and curiosity.

Are Some Human Design Relationships Incompatible?

In Human Design, no two designs are truly incompatible. Our DNA naturally attracts diversity, which means we are often drawn to people who carry different energetic qualities than we do.

What matters most is whether each person is living in alignment with their own Type, Strategy, and Authority. When individuals are connected to their inner Authority and make decisions from that place, relationships tend to feel more natural and supportive.

If you feel a relationship is worth pursuing when you listen to your inner Authority, there is always a way to work with the energy between you.

The Unique Energy of a Relationship

One of the most fascinating aspects of Human Design relationships is that when two auras come together, they create a third energetic field.

This means the dynamic between two people becomes its own unique experience. The way you show up individually may shift when your energies combine, revealing new qualities, insights, and areas of growth.

This shared energy can illuminate strengths, highlight differences, and open opportunities for deeper understanding between both people.

Why Time Alone Matters in Human Design

While the shared aura of a relationship is powerful, spending time in your own energy is equally important.

Stepping away from the relationship field allows each person to reconnect with their own design and inner Authority. When you return to the relationship from that grounded place, it becomes easier to appreciate each other’s differences and interact with greater clarity.

Healthy relationships often involve a rhythm of coming together and returning to your own energy.

The types of channels you might have in your relationship chart

When two Human Design charts come together, the channels within the relationship chart reveal important dynamics in how two people interact, support each other, and experience attraction.

There are four main types of channels that can appear in a relationship chart:

• Companionship (Friendship) Channels
• Compromise Channels
• Dominance Channels
• Electromagnetic (Attraction) Channels

Each type creates a different energetic dynamic between two people.

Companionship (Friendship) Channels:

Companionship channels occur when both people have the same defined channel in their individual charts.

These channels tend to bring a sense of comfort, familiarity, and stability to the relationship. Because both people carry the same energy consistently, they often experience a natural sense of understanding around that aspect of life.

However, companionship channels can sometimes feel less dynamic than other types of connections. When two people share the same energy, that aspect of the relationship may feel so natural that it becomes almost invisible.

Companionship channels place two people on the same energetic wavelength, with similar strengths and similar challenges.

Compromise Channels:

Compromise channels occur when one person has the full channel defined and the other person has only one of the gates.

This creates a natural push-and-pull dynamic. The person with the full channel will naturally express that energy consistently, while the person with the single gate may feel pressure to adapt to that energy even though it doesn’t fully belong to them.

True compromise in Human Design relationships does not mean watering down both people’s energy until no one feels satisfied. Instead, it often means recognizing where one person’s energy naturally leads while the other allows space for that expression.

Generally, things flow more easily when the person with the full channel is allowed to take the lead in that area of life, while the person with the gate respects their own differences and honors their inner Authority when deciding how much to participate.

Awareness, compassion, and respect for each other's design are key when navigating compromise channels.

Dominance Channels:

Dominance channels occur when one person has a defined channel and the other person has that entire channel undefined.

When the two auras come together, the person with the defined channel naturally conditions the other person with that energy. The person with the undefined channel may temporarily experience that energy very strongly while they are in the other person's aura.

However, it is important to remember that the person with the undefined channel will not have consistent access to that energy when they are alone.

Dominance channels can be wonderful opportunities for learning and perspective. The person who does not carry that energy consistently often notices it very clearly and can provide insight about how it operates.

In relationships, dominance channels are often places where couples naturally divide responsibilities, allowing each person’s strengths to shine.

Electromagnetic Channels:

Electromagnetic channels—also called attraction channels—occur when each person carries one gate of a channel.

When these two gates come together, they activate the full channel and create a powerful third energy between the two people.

These channels often create a strong sense of attraction, magnetism, or fascination. Each person carries one half of the energetic story, and together they generate a dynamic experience that neither person carries alone.

Because these energies are unfamiliar to each person individually, they can feel both exciting and challenging. The qualities that attract us most strongly can also trigger us or push us to grow in new ways.

When both people learn to appreciate what the other brings to the channel, electromagnetic connections can become some of the most transformative dynamics within a relationship.
